Dr. Karim El Kholy is currently an Associate Professor of Dental Medicine in the Division of Periodontics at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and a Lecturer at the Division of Periodontics at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. He is the recipient of multiple career and research awards from the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, Harvard University, University of Michigan and Indiana University. Dr. El Kholy is actively involved with teaching in periodontics and implant surgical procedures, practices as a periodontist, and lectures nationally and internationally on various topics related to periodontics, immunology, digital technology, and implant dentistry. Dr. El Kholy received his DDS from University of Detroit and completed his clinical residency in Periodontology and a Master of Science at Indiana University. Following his training, he became a Clinical Assistant Professor and the director of the Externship Program in Periodontics at the University of Michigan from 2008-2013, where he was awarded the best Faculty Award for 2010. He then moved to Harvard University and completed his Doctor of Medical Sciences Degree at the Forsyth Institute under the mentorship of Dr. Thomas Van Dyke between 2013-2017. He also completed an implant residency at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine, while teaching in the Periodontics residency at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. El Kholy was awarded the prestigious Presidential Scholarship from the office of the president of Harvard University for a full 3 years. He was then recruited by his mentor Dr. Daniel Buser for a position at the Department of Oral Surgery at the University of Bern School of Dental Medicine between 2017-2019, while maintaining a Lecturer position at Harvard University. Dr. El Kholy moved back to Canada and became an Associate Professor at McGill University’s Faculty of Dental Medicine, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, before accepting an Associate Professor position at the Division of Periodontology at Columbia University School of Dental Medicine in New York.
